CitizenLab is now co-funded by the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Union. Our project received €50.000 in funds after being selected for the SME Instrument Phase 1 for start-up. Moreover, CitizenLab was chosen in the open disruptive innovation category. With this financial injection, the European Union shows that it supports breakthrough innovation and wants to help us achieve our goals of growth and internationalisation.
A fund dedicated to innovation
The SME Instrument funding is part of the Horizon 2020 programme and is considerable. Between 2014 and 2020, the SME Instrument provided SMEs with €3 billion in funding.
The SME Instrument funding goal is to support high-potential innovation projects to help them grow and expand their activities into other countries (in Europe and beyond).
A highly competitive expertise recognition
The programme is aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises, based in the European Union or in a country associated to Horizon 2020, which are highly innovative with a potential for high growth and internationalisation. This year, CitizenLab was selected by the European Union amongst 2091 proposals, 184 selected SMEs and 176 proposed projects.
Moreover, even though the SME Instrument funding main focus is innovation, a wide range of entreprises apply for it. In order to testify the enterprise’s expertise, the European Union uses topics such as “stimulating the innovation potential of SMEs for a low carbon and efficient energy system” to classify the SMEs’ projects.
Regarding CitizenLab, the European Union selected us on the topic of open disruptive innovation which means that out platform “create new markets by applying new sets of rules, values and models which ultimately disrupt and/or overtake existing markets by displacing earlier technologies and alliances.”
What are the next steps for CitizenLab?
We will use this fund to conduct in-depth research to assess the potential of our innovation and refine our business strategy and product. This way, we will make sure our civic engagement platform is an optimum solution for city officials who want to co-create with their citizens. Moreover, we will leverage this international recognition to grow internally and explore international opportunity.
We would like to thank EYIF and the EU Startup Services for helping us write our application for the SME Instrument Funding.
