Since our founding in 2015, social impact has been core to CitizenLab’s mission of making public decision-making more inclusive, participatory, and responsive.
Today, CitizenLab is excited to further our mission and culture by announcing we are now a Certified B Corporation, joining an impressive group of businesses committed to creating positive impacts for all people, communities, and the planet!
What is B Corp Certification?
B Corps are for-profit, mission-driven companies that seek to balance purpose and profit while boldly reimagining the role that business plays in society. More concretely, Certified B Corps meet B Lab’s high standards for social and environmental impact, making a clear commitment to stakeholder governance, and demonstrating accountability and transparency.
B Lab is a non-profit that measures a company’s social and environmental performance against the standards of the B Impact Assessment. The certification process looks at a business as a whole and examines how it creates value across five key areas: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. To become certified, a company must meet – and continue to uphold – high standards for transparency, accountability, and social and environmental performance.
Today there are over 5,000 Certified B Corporations in more than 80 countries across over 150 industries, and we are proud to join their ranks!
Why B Corp Certification matters
B Corps are contributing to a global culture shift to redefine the impact business can have on our communities, and to move away from a reliance on governments and organizations to create that change alone. We’re excited to be part of the B Corp community of changemakers, working collectively to address society’s most critical challenges while contributing to a more inclusive and regenerative economy that works for everyone, including our team and clients.
CitizenLab’s commitment to social impact
CitizenLab’s mission is about creating positive social change in communities worldwide. In 2021, we released our Theory of Change to show how we measured impact and evaluated our work and now in 2022, we’re proud to “walk the talk” with our B Corp Certification. It’s an honor to have our external mission recognized as well as to have our internal operations validated through this process. After all, we’re not only committed to our mission through our work with organizations and governments, but also through the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices we instill in our internal culture. From our team diversity (15+ nationalities represented and a 50:50 gender balance) to practices such as 10% of all employee’s time dedicated to impact projects, and employee ownership (60% of employees invested in CitizenLab), we’re committed to further developing our social impact, inside and out.
As a company that promotes and practices transparency, we believe this B Corp certification will provide us with a clear impact roadmap that holds us accountable for strengthening our positive social impact as a company for years to come.
